I don't know if I'm already on this list, but even if I am- all the better. You and your vision are definitely worth me putting my name down here at LEAST twice! I continue to be inspired and amazed by your fortitude, your tenacity, your tenderness, your willingness to move forward in your art to the next level. No matter how achingly gut wrenching it may be...you work to find the next catharsis, and in so doing enable us to do the same. Love to you always Rock.

the work you are doing is so important to me, not only for energy and enthusiasm and purpose, but because it is similar to my story of hidden pain and triumph that comes from being adopted/foster care. It is very healing and revealing to witness your work. Like I dont have to fight so hard or try to explain...I could send people to your show. Love and admiration

You were born with such an amazing purpose. The world is blessed because you reconized that and laid down your plan for it all. Hugs to you on your Journey Rock.

I love it Rock you inspire me everyday, you move me in an uncomfortable way that I love because like you I have a need to express my self but unlike me you are actively giving your hrs, days, nights, And your life to all of us that feel disconnected with the world and at times even with our biological families! I appreciate you: your dedication, your work moved me to tears like a baby and a mother all at once!!!

Hey Rock! I'm a creative writer from rbr and you performed for us yesterday. i just wanted to say thank you because that performance was one of the most inspirational and amazing things ive ever witnessed. Your writing is what mine aspires to be. It really was an honor having that experience. Youre such an awesome, chill guy and it was such a pleasure to meet you. Thank you again!

Skye Alexandra

May 13, 2011

Hey Rock,
I'm a Creative Writing Major at RBR and seeing you today was one of the best experiences I've ever had. Your piece didn't lose me once; I never wanted it to be over.

Kaylah Swanger

May 13, 2011

Rock! Your performance today was truly amazing, I'm still trying to understand how you could perfectly capture twelve different personalities using one body. The writing was absolutely inspiring, the acting was captivating, and the fact that you can stand up in front of a group of strangers and tell your life story like that is beautiful. My brother was part of the Music Theory class that came in for the second half, and he has never seen a play a day in his life, writing doesn't interest him at all, and to be honest, he doesn't understand why I love it so much, because to him, it's just a chore, and he doesn't get how it could be somebody's passion. But the second we got into the car to go home today, the first thing he said was, "That guy Rock Wilk is friggin awesome. I walked in thinking it was gonna be just another play the school always tries to make us watch, but from the minute he started talking until the minute he stopped, I don't think I picked my jaw up once." You really are incredible, and I'm glad you're getting the type of recognition that you are - you 100% deserve it. Thank you so much for performing for us today, it was an experience none of us will ever forget.

Nancy

May 7, 2011

Rock, your brilliance to turn everyday words and your experiences into superhuman penetrating force never ceases to amaze me. You are INSPIRATION, MOTIVATION, HOPE and RESILIENCE, personified. You ARE Gibraltar, herculean strength, can't nothing destroy you!

Elisa Galindez

April 23, 2011

If you only knew how much you moved me when you performed! I can not thank you enough for blessing us with your presence! It was a huge success and I am glad to have shared it with you. thank you for being a huge support to Side Street Kids! We really appreciate it.

April 7, 2011

I am truly silenced by your genius and ability to stir energy with your honesty and prose, allowing the world to boldly and freely peer into your heart. Whether you create gentle wind, or a gust of whirlwinds or hurricanic forces, you sweep through our lives with powerful alliances from those energies on and off this plane that exist within you, touching the very essence of our own breath. Your mom and dad have translated from this physical earth and power your wings giving, through you, inspiration to me, and all whom come within earshot or eyesight of your heart-filled revelations. I am silenced as I read, hear your songs and breathe in your spirit...for all I can do is simply feel...

March 24, 2011

Having had the privilege of seeing Mr. Wilk's Los Angeles show, I had an epiphany: Though I already knew the show to be a theatrical tour-de-force, I always thought the title referred to Mr. Wilk's journey. Though it may, it most directly applies to the state the fortunate audience member finds themself in as they walk out having just shared life with this wrecking ball of a performer. To anyone who reads this, you have been forewarned: don't see this show unless and until you are prepared to be BROKE WIDE OPEN in the best way possible.

Katrina

March 23, 2011

thank you for baring your 'Beautiful Soul' at last week's LA show...such an honor to witness...keep shining your Light...Peace & Blessings

March 19, 2011

All the way home Jeff and I were ruminating about all we saw. It's really incredible, what you have in this piece. And how amazing it is already--- this is a life's work sort of piece. Something you could hone and chisel for years. What a grand, deep, gloriously authentic piece of work. That's how powerful your show was- a HUGE inspiration.
Thank you.

Melanie Fox

March 19, 2011

I haven't been able to stop thinking about your show since I saw it on Thursday. Your presence on stage is breathtaking. I am grateful I was able to experience it and see you perform again after all these years. Keep going with this...it's brilliant!

JD

March 15, 2011

I saw your performance here in Oakland tonight. You added a dimension of compassion and understanding to my relationship with my adult, adopted partner of 6 months. I get it. I understand so much more now that any book or class could have taught me. Again, I must thank you. My Nann struggles to allow herself to love me--but I know she does. My entire perspective has had light shined upon it--and I owe you gratitude deeper than I can begin to articulate.

Be well. Your show was tremendous.

Jeff Bohnhoff

March 15, 2011

The show in Oakland last night was insanely good - honest, electric, sad/happy and inspiring. I was sitting there thinking this belongs in front of A LOT of people. Keep the train rolling!

March 14, 2011

Rock, THANK YOU for allowing us into your world and sharing your journey. It was truly a privilege. I was under a spell and didn't know if 20 minutes had passed or 4 hours. Hope Seattle gets the honor of hosting you again...

Saundra, Denver, Colorado

March 11, 2011

Last night a quiet storm blew through Denver. It went pretty much unnoticed by the citizens of the Mile High City on a rather balmy winter night. However, a mixed audience of young and old, Black, White and Brown, witnessed this storm first-hand at The Art Garage. Normally a gathering place of artists with all degrees of talent, Rock Wilk brought his one-man show “BrokeWideOpen: Unplugged” to Denver for a one-time only, first performance at this location and played to his audience as though he was in your living room. He entered your mind, heart and soul. Ventured into places that some have tried to protect. Some feared. Some questioned. Some knew exactly what he was talking about because they have walked a similar path. Love. Loss. Fear. Anger. Life. Family. Today, the storm will leave Denver as quietly as it came in. It did not leave a path of destruction. Rather, it opened minds and hearts to another man’s path. Actor, writer, musician, singer. His story. His words. It opened conversation in a small group of Denver citizens who will share this experience with anyone that will listen. There is life in this story, as there is a story in each of our lives.

February 26, 2011

...just wanted to say your show really broke me down in a good way. i really am "broke wide open" i'm like flooded with words, like some matrix code or something. and the more i look the more i see things. so thank you! big love

Nancy

February 23, 2011

You are an AMAZING person/artist/performer, it was my pleasure to be a part of that beautiful night.
I was captivated from the moment you placed the rocks on the floor. Through your eyes I saw that young 6 yr old boy and through your words you were able to take the audience through some of the most joyful, sad, and hopeful times in your life. You have the incredible ability to connect with people despite who they are or what their background is.
Good performances captivate you for that small moment in time but great performances, great performances stay with you forever because of how they make you feel. Your performance was great Rock. Thank you for sharing your life so openly and honestly.
Anyone that has ever felt out of place, insecure, unsure about themselves (as we all have) will be touched by your story. When it's all said and done we're really all just the same, lost souls in search of ourselves. Be blessed in your travels throughout the country. I hope the rest of the world is ready for the force that we know as "Rock Wilk" because they're about to be "Broke Wide Open"

February 22, 2011

Rock you will make every one love you for your heart, strength, honesty and just spontaneous way of expression. I want to thank you for what u have given me tonight. You really honor your name. You have opened my heart up and put back together as strong as a rock. Every sense of not belonging even though I wasn't adopted found a home and everything made sense. My questions found a home in my heart through your personal story which is also every one elses' in their own way...Thank you for your heart Rock!!!!
I lololololoved u!

you and your production taught me to put dreams in motion and to F*&k fear so thanks for that..you have that effect on many people...whenever you come up in conversation all parties involved in the convo agree that you are an amazing example of an artist living breathing dreams and inspiring others to do the same...

Soft Rock ;) What can I say about you! Then...my energy was drained, no physical force to stand up and give you a standing ovation. My brain was slapped, a teary feeling in my throat... Now, I hear your voice secretely on the train and move a bit with your beat. In a week, I'll get to know you again. Soon... we will rock da' house!

December 19, 2010

Your performance and presence were so powerful and captivating; watching you was almost like being under a spell. . . It takes a lot of courage and humility to bare one's soul like that, pouring it all out there into the room, into your audience, holding nothing back, like waves crashing onto the shore, changing and rearranging the landscape with each one that rolls in -- it was truly a spiritual experience and I am forever grateful to have been a part of it. I'm happy to have wandered across your path during this journey of self discovery. . .I walked away last night feeling stronger and braver because of you, and I can't thank you enough for that. I look forwad to seeing you again soon and being spellbound once again. . .

December 19, 2010

BROKE WIDE OPEN is a sad, funny, tragic, inspiring, angry, forgiving, and hopeful metamorphosis!!!! The show was everything I ever dreamed it would be and much more. If this is not the best one man show I've ever seen it's definitely in my top 2 ROCK!!! You are the effin' man!! I will see it once more on your workshop tour and on Broadway when it gets there. Yea, I said it!!! BROADWAY!!!

October 18, 2010

I had the opportunity to see you perform a few of your pieces this weekend @ Camaradas. Let me begin by saying that passion, anger, love, hope, were all emotions I felt while listening to your speak. Your piece on Sean Bell was truly amazing. It sent chills up and down and spine. Your delivery is full of all those elements that make great performers memorable.

Kevin Yu

July 15, 2010

Heard you perform at Nuclear Poetry yesterday. I believe the piece was Ellie. It was intense and raw. Thank you for touching upon such a subject in a tactful manner. Others whom I have heard perform a piece on that topic, did it in such a way that inadvertently infer that those victims do not have a voice, hence someone else had to speak for them. You came across as empathetic and somewhat outraged for her. I must admit I was tearing and shaken up with that performance and for that I thank you! Amazing!

Lalita LaMonte

I like picture #23. I see a battled and beaten man who is very quiet but ready to lash out if only at the right time. Those are signs of someone who posses a wise and understanding soul. Wisdom is a gift that you should hold close to your heart. No one can take that from you.

Your name encomasses who you are. Not any old rock...the rock that is so strong that not even a mighty storm could break. The only way that mighty rock could be broken is with your own will. You have "broken yourself open" with no regrets. How has it made you feel? The longest journey is the journey inward.

Peace David

JAYsus, Man—expecting something important beforehand but not knowing what or why, not knowing you then but knowing you are a whole of pieces and a piece of all of our whole—a collective voice of internal voices. Lyrical like Kerouac, broken and open like Billie Holiday, a wanderer simultaneously propelled and pulled forward, taking us all with you.
I wanted to wrap you in a hug after the show. Wanted you to know that your search and your anger matter to all of us. Wanted you to know that there's always a table where there's a place for you.

February 5, 2010

Rock! What can I possibly say to describe your 2/5/10 show? I felt like a newcomer & an old friend at the same time. I have never seen you that collected & broken open while splintering your audience as your journey took them home. Thank you for showing me how to take leaps forward while looking back, for showing that... it is possible to be grounded in your past without being shackled. Truly your performance & the evolution of BROKE WIDE OPEN are in a symbiotic relationship now more than ever. I am in willingly broken pieces ready to search for my truth. Peace.

soooo.... where do i start? from the moment i walked in I felt an energy that was tranquil and magnetic which put me at ease. I took my seat in the last row and was in awe of your performance and dialogue. I had a mix of emotions as you spoke... tears flowed and then they were followed by a chuckle and laughter. Your story of survival shows diligence and strength. You have a powerful tool and that is your voice... Thank you for sharing it with us.

The show was amazing! Society fails to mention everything that Rock WIilk feels compelled to expose. I can't think of a single person that I know who would see his show and not walk out with a much broader and indepth understanding of prejudice in America. I'm glad i got to see the show for $10, rather than the $200 that everyone will pay in a year or two

Jessica Keck aka "Ica"

August 19, 2009

So Rock, my first comment was 2/23/09!! What a difference 6 months make! By far your show on 8/15 affected me the most but then you have gone deeper and so must the audience.

I was inspired to write and took notes before they left my brain as my soul was being fed your truth. I still am enraptured by the reactions the people have to your words. No one leaves unaffected!

As I mentioned at the Q&A, I believed the ending could be fleshed out more, thought that was a bit rushed. Feel the impact of your last relationship could be brought in the show given how much positive you have gained through the negative to get you to be BROKE WIDE OPEN! Also, the only drawback for me, the thing that took me out of the show, was the sound effect for flashing forward or flashing back. I think it would work well once or twice. And some of the flashes were back to back to back, lol. I followed easily because I have followed your shows for some time. Don't know how people hearing it for the first time might react. I wouldn't want anyone to miss any part of your show! ;) I know you will take these criticisms as a stimulus for advancement. :)

That said, I look forward to BROKE WIDE OPEN's further growth and definition . I will continue to attend your shows as my own evolution has been further triggered by your work. Many thanks for your courageousness that is boundless. Peace! ;)

I thought your one man show was very soulful and well-put together. You are very smart and have a good understanding on how to speak from the heart. As you where speaking for the different people being portrayed,I felt like I was really there with you at the time when the situations occured. Your imagry and dialogue were right on point and I would go to see "Broke Wide Open" again.

Nice show last saturday in Asbury Park. The perfect final touch to end a sunny day at the ocean and to feel just alive. Broke. But wide open. Go on. Myriam. PS : My nephew ( with me at the show) approved this message

hi rock -
I liked your performance & also your music on the CD. I can hear that you have opened up yourself in this process. You have "broke wide open".
Performance (sat 15th):
1st 1/2 the characters came alive & I got a sense of your anguish of your situation. The 22 facts did move kind of fast;I caught on about #10... The 2nd 1/2 of show moved slow; characters were not that clear nor how you came to be in Asbury(since it was clear you weren't leaving the city again..) I found myself drifting away from story & I wanted you to just open the box to get the answer you were seeking; & to hear your bio moms side of the story. last 1/2 seemed thrown together fast. too many FU's for my ears; it changed the who you are for me.(a nice Jewish boy with a beautiful voice & talent...speaking this of course with THE accent)
I did hear your anguish & sense of rejection come thru. I liked the moving between reading, music, & video.
Good luck with this project.
Looking forward to the final version.
I like the beat in your music.

I think the G train is the only subway I have never ridden on!!Have you ever ridden the "aboveway" subway on Staten Island?

I truly enjoyed your courageous performance Saturday night. You were able to make your story compelling to a diverse audience. I think we all saw a part of ourselves in your story which created a converstaion of relatedness that was pleasantly unexpected. All of this aside, I cried when you found resolution with your father, honoring him for adopting you and acknowledging him for coming to all of your games. I looked over and my twin sister was crying too. It's amazing how you were able to touch complete strangers...and I look forward to seeing what you do next.

August 17, 2009

Rock your show was mind blowing. There are only two things that I didn't like. The first was that I got there late and I am so curious as to what I missed and the second is that I have no one to talk to about it. Its like a good movie you want to relive it through conversation but I was the only person from my circle that saw it. I can't belive how real it was, how you were indepth and honest. The connection that you made with the crowd that seemed to take no effort. The best thing is how different people can relate to your story. You had the crowd display different emotions and It was great to sit back and listen to all the great comments. I learned so much about you and can't wait to learn more. Keep doing your thing.

Greg Demaras

August 17, 2009

You are incredibly talented, Rock. Your performance was so powerful. I sit and watch in awe and yet I feel intimately connected as you expose your pain, insight and humor about your life. Your story, your words stay with me - "Your sight makes you Deaf!" Awesome - many more but I could only paraphrase - brilliant.
THANK YOU!

Looking forward to your the revolution and evolution of BROKE WIDE OPEN! The growth you are showing is incredible. You even have a h8r now which all gr8s do, lmao. There will always be ppl who just don't get it. Self-absorbed cannot be confused with introspection unless those claiming it don't look inward themselves. That alone speaks volumes. Remember you hold a mirror to all, not just yourself & some can't stand the reflection and can only respond with deflection. Keep that Tsunami coming that I compared you to when I first started coming to your shows. Those open will be cleansed, those closed will be washed away. Peace always! :)

Memento Mori-
I hear you and take your words into consideration as I do all the words that find themselves to this page. I appreciate the fact that you find me so interesting that you would take the time to leave your thoughts. My "struggle" will continue, I promise you.
Peace
Rock

What a narcissist. So self-absorbed! Get your head out of your ass, and stop pretending to look like an ex-con or a gang-banger when you are just a middle class white boy. Start being true to yourself instead of copying others and then whatever talent you might have will emerge. Still struggling after all these years should be your first clue...

In the song "Forget", Mr. Wilk has achieved creative nirvana by penning the perfectly motivated work. There is no word, sound or silence that doesn't blend seamlessly within this piece's immaculate framework. It reaches the apotheosis of artistic expression by conveying what it means to be a fucking human being, sounding a narrative that traffics in the need to banish memory while compelling the opposite result--being unforgettable once heard.

Few people would dare pose the questions raised in this song. Fewer still would have the courage and grace to answer them. Mr. Wilk has gifted everyone who hears this with something that we are left to conclude has no expiration date: hope.
And for that, we will forever owe him.

Yours in debt,

Michael Raysses

another day in the salt mines missing the show, yadda yadda yadda. rock, what i dug about "ft greene" was the native american chant overlays on your snapshot spits...and the double-dutch fingersnaps and handclap rhythms cool, the ancestral moans from under the weeds and words lending that 'better get this shit right' context. don't know (or wanna know) that spineless realtor wishing all things middle-class-and-below to poof-vanish. don't work that way baby when the big wheel of karma gets finished. hear that mikey bloomberg? checked out the rest beyond "ft greene" place of my birth....and rock, you are like that little energetic lifeblood flower pushing like crazy up out of the concrete, all happy and angry and giving it....and i think that's what folks like about you.
Thanks for that. Peace.
